QUEENSLAND couple Cheryl
and Matt like to ignite a fire in
the kitchen — and a whole lot
of other places.
The pair, affectionately known
as the “cougar couple”, will hit
our screens tonight when My
Kitchen Rules returns to Seven.
And they make no secret of
their passion for each other.
They’ve been dating for two
years and met when 50-year-
old Cheryl saw 26-year-old Matt
at the casino in Brisbane.
“I was actually out with my
girlfriend who was having a
divorce party and we were
dancing up a storm,” Cheryl told
news.com.au. “And my
girlfriend took a shine to Matt’s
friend. She was talking to him
and I saw Matt standing at the
bar all lit up like a Christmas tree
in his pink shirt and green jeans
— he kind of stood out. We just
started talking about
everything.”
But the night didn’t end there.
“Matt had a sleepover,” Cheryl
said, laughing. “He got kicked
out the next morning. I was like,
‘Get out! I’ve got to go get my
daughter!’”
“I don’t do the one night stand
thing. I actually really enjoyed
Matt’s company and we
continued talking through the
night actually. We do still do that
when we’re together, we go
somewhere and all of a sudden
it’s four o’clock in the morning
and we’ve just been talking.
“We just solve the worlds
problems. We’ve still got to solve
society’s view about older
women and younger men at the
moment.”
For Matt, the age isn’t a
problem. “She’s 18 with 32
years experience,” he jokes.
Being put in such an intense
environment like the MKR
kitchen would put pressure on
even the strongest relationship,
but Cheryl said the experience
only made them closer.
“He can be bossy, but I like that
because no one ever bosses me
around,” she admited.
“During the show, Matt was
actually quite serious about the
whole thing and I was, like,
carrying on like a porkchop.
And when stuff didn’t go the
way we wanted it to go, Matt
was the one who picked me up.
So we kind of have this real see-
saw balance that works.”
And even though it was
impossible to hide any of their
secrets, fights or mistakes on
the show, there was one thing
they didn’t let the cameras see.
“Matt cooks naked,” Cheryl
laughed. “Sometimes if I’m in
the mood (I’ll join him). When
we get home, off come the
clothes. (But) he keeps it private
— I’m the only lucky one.”
Cheryl and Matt are just one of
the 12 teams who will battle it
out for $250,000 in prize
money. Tonight, along with
Cheryl and Matt, we’ll meet six
other teams who make up
Group One and watch them get
whittled down.
MONIQUE AND SARAH
These New South Wales police
officers became friends after
bonding over their love of food
in the office. Mum-of-four
Monique, 33, said her friendship
with 26-year-old Sarah was still
only fresh. “It’s a very young
relationship,” she said. “We’d
only been working together
about three months when we
applied for the show. We’ve
known of each other for about
four years.”
MITCH AND LAURA
This brother-and-sister team
from Victoria are the youngest
cooks in to competition.
Even though she’s younger, 19-
year-old Laura says she called
the shots in the kitchen. “
“I’m definitely head chef. Or it’s
more like an army — I’m
commander and he’s my soldier.
He’s very good,” she said of her
21-year-old brother.
ROSIE AND PAIGE
Thirty-seven-year-old mum-of-
two Rosie and 34-year-old
Paige are best mates from
South Australia. For these two,
MKR is just a small step in their
culinary dreams. Rosie has plans
to eventually open a wedding
event company while Paige
wants to open a providore. But
don’t let that throw you off
what they’re capable of cooking
in the competition. Rosie said
they both love cooking Middle
Eastern and Asian food.
